After the closure of the official Gippsland Community Power Hub and the commitment of the Governance Group to continue meeting to serve the needs of communities across Gippsland, the group recognised there were a number of communities across the region working on ‘town scale’ projects.
The five towns/areas are Venus Bay, Heyfield, Phillip Island, Sandy Point and Mallacoota. We established what is now called the Microgrid Towns Initiative as a working group amongst these five communities.
In about February 2023 Henry O’Clery from Venus Bay brought us a fascinating project idea. He proposed that we get a community eBus in each of the five communities (none of whom have a dedicated community-owned and run bus) and use this eBus for community-owned and operated transportation, for research, for community engagement, etc etc.
Several months into the design of this project we have agreed that we will run a 2-year research pilot in Venus Bay and Sandy Point, with the other organisations involved in the research as the (at this stage informal) reference group.
