This project is at the heart of Mallacoota’s energy sustainability.
Mallacoota sits at the end of a very long, low voltage feeder line running much of the way through hilly bush. This leads to inevitable fragility in energy transmission, impacted by vegetation, animals and weather. Grid stability has been a significant issue.
This project has predominantly been a long-term determination to develop a relationship with our distribution company in which we become acknowledged and active partners in developing and maintaining energy supply and that it be sustainable and, further, that it be from renewable sources.
Mallacoota has a history of being (needing to be) self-sufficient. We also value highly the environment in which we live. Many or most of our sustainability improvements have been a result of independent community action leading eventually to external entities adding their support. Energy sustainability is no different from our willingness perspective but we are tied (literally) to our distributor’s poles and wires.
This project is part of a long-term commitment to helping our distribution company to help us. That is our origin story which you can find HERE.
The project has been one of persistence and perseverance over time, being there and encouraging involvement. 2023 is a decade from our forming and it is, thus far, seeming to be bringing our desire to life.
If you live in or are a regular or first time or regular visitor to Mallacoota, we would love you to become more aware of and involved in our energy story. For instance: Where does energy here in Mallacoota come from? How does it get here? What’s the difference between ‘normal’ energy and ‘renewable’ energy? What does my bill tell me about my usage?
