The Premium Feed-in Tariff (PFiT) was an incentive for ‘early adopters’ to install 1.5kW solar systems. It ran for 2 years between late 2009 and the end of 2011.
The scheme offered eligible households, businesses and community organisations with small-scale solar systems of five kilowatts or less a credit of at least 60 cents per kilowatt hour for excess electricity fed back into the grid.
More than 88,000 Victorian households, small businesses and community groups benefit from the PFIT.
The PFiT ends on 30 November 2024. We wish to understand our community members’ intentions beyond that date with respect to their energy use. We intend to interview as many of those 100+ who installed their systems under that program as is possible, recognising that many of these people will have lost their houses on NYE 2019.
Eligible properties with an effective PFIT contract will continue to receive this rate until November 30 2024, provided they do not add extra solar panels to their system.
One of our TRiM members was personally responsible for getting over 100 installations across Mallacoota in those 2 years. Almost all were 1kW or 1.5kW systems and they are now all 12-14 years old. The upside is that their owners have been making 60/kWh more than others across the years. The downside is that many haven’t chosen to add to their systems because of the loss of the tariff.
