TRiM PROJECTS

The Community Microgrid and Sustainable Energy Project (CMSEP)

This project was launched on 27 May 2021 by the Victorian Government’s desire to ‘increase the resilience’ of several bushfire affected communities – namely Omeo, Corryong and Mallacoota.

What we do

The Department of Energy Environment and Climate Action (DEECA, formerly DELWP) launched the Mallacoota part of this project intending to increase the size of our big battery and generator so that it could sustain us for up to 5 days. MSEG’s Coordinator was invited to be a member of the project’s Control Group. She noted to the project owner that that would not have helped AT ALL during the fires and wouldn’t in the future if there was any breach within the town’s microgrid. After discussion there was agreement to shift the focus to multiple small microgrids on key buildings around the community. This work has been slow but is progressing. Community engagement helped identify key buildings and work is almost complete on negotiations with building owners and occupiers.
